Two special calf championships in the Hereford section helped draw a record entry of Herefords with over 40 exhibits present on the day. Knockduffpoll 1 Flower exhibited by Messers Curtis & Jones, Bree, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford won the overall supreme Hereford championship under judge John Neenan, Broadford, Co Limerick. This six year-old cow is no stranger to success having previously taken the female championship at the National Hereford Show, Tullamore back in 2012. She is sired by Ardlahan Ginger and is out of Knockduff Flower.
Reserve championship
The reserve championship went to Eamon McKiernan, Monasterboice, Drogheda, Co Louth with Knockmountagh Willow. This September 2015 born heifer also took the junior heifer calf championship. This heifer was also a 1st prizewinner at Dundalk show last weekend and is sired by the new UK bred AI bull Haven Kingpin.
Taking the reserve heifer calf championship was John Jones, Pallas, Gorey, Co Wexford with Clonroe Elsie. This heifer calf was born in July 2015 and is sired by Baltymore Ginger.
Special male calf championship
In the special male calf championship, Tom Brennan, Freshford, Co Kilkenny took both the championship and the reserve with Balleen Perfection and Balleen Diplomat respectively. Both of these bulls were born in September 2015 and both were sired by CH 3223 Visa 57X.
In addition to the top prize in the Hereford section, Messers Curtis & Jones, Knockduff, Co Wexford also won the overall Charolais championship with Knockduff Lenny. This bull was born in September 2015 and is sired by the AI bull Voimo.
Belgian Blue championship
The Belgian Blue championship went to Melvin Masterson, Rathnure, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford with Boroside Isabelle. This in-calf heifer is sired by AI bull Empire. Taking the reserve championship in the Belgian Blue section was Helena Fitzgerald, Piltown, Co Kilkenny with the senior heifer Pinnacle Hardy.
Local breeder Alaster Swift, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford took top honours in the Parthenaise section winning the championship with his homebred bull Monfin Swift. This bull is sired by Ti Lapin and was born in August 2015.
Aberdeen Angus section
Meanwhile in the Aberdeen Angus section, Edward Dudley, Thurles, Co Tipperary completed a clean sweep of the top awards, taking home both the championship and the reserve championship with Castlelough Miss Bea P142 and Castlelough Mystic Babe R160 respectively.
The commercial champion was awarded to Owen O’ Neill, Bagnelstown, Co Carlow with a two year-old Charolais commercial heifer out of a Belgian Blue cow. Helena Fitzgerald, Piltown, Co Kilkenny took the reserve championship with a half-bred Charolais bullock.
