The good April weather saw a lot of grass buyer activity but this was less evident today, with €2.15/kg to €2.25/kg the going rate for most of the beef crosses from dairy herds.

There were exceptions to this, with continentals and potential R grading Angus selling for up to €2.55/kg. Friesians sold from €1.45/kg up to €1.80/kg.

Forward store bullocks requiring a short finishing period were also in demand, selling for between €1.95/kg and €2.20/kg depending on breed.

    Calves

    Calf numbers continue to fall back, with just over 1,200 on offer this week. It was one of the dearer calf sales of the year.

    Friesian bull calves made from €70 to €190, with older bull calves selling for up to €285. Hereford and Angus cross bull calves sold for between €190 and €440. Heifers of these breeds sold in a similar pattern, with calves making from €190 up to €420. Continental heifers sold for up to €445 and continental bulls made up to €500.

    Cows

    Demand for cows continues to be extremely strong, with the majority freely making €200 to €300 over the €/kg.

    Great cows are making great money was the description of the ringside action. Higher prices over the €/kg were available for younger cows, but older cows still performed well.

    Overall cows made from €90 to €675 over their weight.
