The board of Lakeland Dairies has decided to drop its milk collection charge for every second-day collection.

The 0.037c/litre will no longer be charged on every litre of milk collected and is applicable from 1 April. Therefore the next milk cheque Lakeland suppliers receive will not contain the collection charge.

The decision was taken by the board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, where it also decided to hold its milk price in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The price for Republic suppliers stays at 29.67c/l, with the Northern Ireland price static at 25p/l.

For a Lakeland farmer producing 300,000 litres – reasonably close to the society average – the removal of the 0.37c/l levy on every litre collected would add between €1,000 and €1,100 to a farmer’s bank balance each year.
