Cattle prices: grass buyers dominate at Roscommon mart
Last Friday's general cattle sale saw another large entry of stock rise to meet firm demand. Grass buyer activity continues to be strong, with buyers from the west, south and midlands present.
Last Friday’s sale at Roscommon Mart saw another large entry of over 600 cattle. Mart manager Maura Quigley said that the quality of bullocks was very high and that both grass buyers and feeders were active for stores and forward types.
In the bullock ring, there were over 250 bullocks, with those over 600kg selling mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg. Prices averaged at about €870 over the weight for these types.
Feeder buyers and factory agents were the main source of demand for all finished cattle.

Heifers from 550kg upwards sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg, with better-quality U grades making from €2.30/kg to €2.45/kg.
Forward store bullocks over 500kg sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg, with top-quality heavy types making up to €2.60/kg or €800 to €880 along with the weight.
Grass buyers were very active for lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg, which sold from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg or from €600 to €700 over, with top-quality types selling for as much as €2.70/kg or €1,105 for 405kg. Light store heifers from 380kg to 450kg were a very strong trade also, with lots of buyers present. Prices ranged mainly from €550 to €725 over the weight.
Commission rates are €9 to the buyer along with a €2 entry fee and 1.9% to the seller.
