Weather and money woes continue to hamper the pedigree beef bull trade, with the average price at the Hereford premier in Tullamore on Saturday taking a hit.

While the clearance rate did increase from 30% to 50%, the average dropped by over €200 to level at €3,122. This trend is no exception, with most other breed societies reporting mixed trade throughout their spring sales. A general consensus from breeders is that later sales look set to be better, in line with commercial farmers eventually getting their animals out to grass.

However, one of the highs of the sale came late on when the first prize winner of the last class set the sale alight. Cill Cormaic Prince 2 from David Larkin caught the attention of a number of potential buyers, with the bull being knocked down at €5,000. Successful bidder was Nelson McCrabbe, Raphoe, Co Donegal. Sired by Black Water Lad, this October 2016-born bull is out of homebred Cill Cormaic Lavinia, a Cedar Liam daughter. The Larkin family is a familiar name in Hereford circles and this year the herd marks 90 years in breeding and this sale-topper marks the second year in a row David has produced the top-priced bull at the premier.

David’s second bull also went on to sell for one of the upper prices on the day. Cill Cormaic Ocean, an April 2016-born bull secured a bid of €3,500, selling to pedigree breeder Michael Molloy. This four-star bull was homebred on both sides and had placed fourth earlier in the day in the pre-sale show.

Gerald Blandford of Bosa Herefords in the UK was the judge for the day, he found his champion in the form of Airhill OConaill from JJ Farrell, Longford. This 18-month-old bull was sired by Ardmulchan Himalagan while the dam was Airhill Jug, a Cill Cormaic Clinton bred dam. Having failed to meet his reserve, the day’s champion was later sold outside the ring for €4,250, selling to John Bergin, Co Laois.

Securing the reserve overall championship were Sam and Nigel Heatrick with Glaslough Sid. This powerful August 2016-born bull was sired by Clondrina 1110th while the dam was homebred Glaslough Dot. Trade on the day failed to live up to the expectation this super bull carried so Sid left the ring unsold.

Next in the money was Frank Harrington, Strokestown, who sold his 19-month-old F.H. Kingpin for €3,700. This twin to a female was sired by well-known AI bull Haven Kingpin and carried one of the best sets of figures in the catalogue. Successful bidder of the third top price was David Dolan, Tullamore.

Niall Daly and Lisa Halloway saw their second prize winner Gageboro Rumpus secure a bid of €3,550. This bull was also sired by the aforementioned Haven Kingpin, while the dam Boyanna Oyster is out of Boyanna Kickstart. This one was knocked down to Colm Conlon, Athlone.

Matching the price of David Larkin’s second bull was Kye Harry 753 which sold for €3,500. This bull was exhibited by well-known breeder Padraig McGrath and features Free Town Hotspur, Bowmount Storm and Churchill Storm in his pedigree. With four stars on both the terminal and replacement index, Harry was secured by Fergus Glennon, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
