Tuam Mart’s sale on Tuesday evening witnessed a much livelier trade than the previous week. Prices were steady, with factory agents and butchers competing for limited numbers.

There was an entry of about 250 spring lambs, 70 cull ewes and 15 lots of ewes with lambs at foot, with hoggets all but dried up at this stage.

Manager Marian Devane reported good-quality lambs weighing 43kg to 46kg selling on average from €115 to €122, with the best-quality butcher lambs rising to €129 for top-quality 47kg lambs.

There was a wide differential in prices paid, depending on how well lambs were fleshed, with 39kg to 40kg lambs selling from shy of €100 to €110 for better-quality lots.

There was a few entries of lighter store lambs, with prices again largely influenced by quality. Lambs weighing 32kg to 34.5kg sold from €66 to €80, with the lightest pen of 25kg lambs selling for €66.

Cull ewes remain a steady trade, with prices for lowland ewes ranging from €80 to €112.

Entries of ewes with lambs at foot are reducing, with prices ranging from €150 for ewes with a single lamb at foot to €208 for aged ewes with young lambs at foot.

Commission rates are €1 to the buyer and 1.5% to the seller.
