Dry weather continues to play havoc in parts of Europe according to the latest MARS crop monitoring unit report. Favourable conditions for sowing and emergence of winter crops has dominated the weather in many parts of northern and western Europe.
However, the reports states that in large parts of central Europe, ongoing moisture deficits has hampered the emergence and early growth of winter crops, as well as the harvesting of sugar beet and potatoes.
Dry weather
Continued dry soil conditions in many areas of Germany, western Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia has led to poor plant emergence and early crop development. The report states that plants stands are gappy and emergence is poor in many of these areas.

In Germany, emergence and early growth of winter crops is said to be highly compromised by lack of water and nutrient deficiencies are present.
In France, Poland and Ukraine, sowing and emergence has generally gone well with just a few areas affected by the dry weather.
Plant emergence was delayed in many areas of Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. Plant stands are said to be gappy. Sowing was substantially delayed due to low soil moisture in Slovenia, Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia.
In Spain and Portugal, following a dry period, rainfall has meant that sowing conditions were ideal and crop emergence and development is good.
In Italy, wet and warm weather has favoured sowing and germination of winter cereals. Dry weather in Greece is delaying winter crop sowing.
Finally, winter sowings were completed in October in good conditions in the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia where crops established well.
A challenging potato and beet harvest
The potato harvest is largely completed across Europe, according to the report. In areas with prolonged moisture deficits, hard and dry soils have hampered harvesting and caused damage to tubers.
The EU sugar beet harvest is currently ongoing. The UK and French harvest is progressing well in generally favourable conditions.
In many other regions however, the harvest has been delayed. This was in part due to late sowing and partly due to hard and dry soil conditions. Farmers are pushing to finish as much as they can before harsher, frosty weather arrives.
