In total, 1,557 farmers have appealed their exclusion from the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) scheme as a result of new maps pertaining to the scheme, the Department of Agriculture has told the Irish Farmers Journal.

“Further to the completion of the ANC redesignation project, the Department has received a total of 1,557 notifications of appeal in respect of 759 individual townlands.

“Over recent weeks, the Department has been issuing letters in response to these notifications outlining the data underpinning the status of the relevant townland in order that an appeal to the independent appeals committee can be based on full information.

“Further to this process, to date, appeals in respect of 110 individual townlands have been made to the appeals committee,” the spokesperson said.

Appeal hearings

The hearing of full appeals could only commence once the deadline for the receipt of notification, 8 April, had passed and the completion of appeals will, to a large extent, be determined by the number of full appeals received.

Under the new maps, at least 60% of the land in a townland must be deemed to have a natural constraint for any of it to be included in the scheme.

Counties affected

Wexford is the county with the highest number of appeals, accounting for over one third of all appeals at over 530.

It was followed by Offaly, Tipperary, Laois and Donegal.
