The renowned Stirling bull sales took place last week and although an online bidding facility was not available, the sale performed quiet well with just limited ringside and phone bidders.

Hitting the top price was the Charolais breed which topped at an impressive 20,000gns.

Securing the bid was the 18-month-old Gretnahouse Primate from Alasdair Houston. Sired by the easy-calving Westcarse Jimmy, he is out of a homebred dam by Blelack Digger. Having attracted much talk pre-sale he was eventually knocked down to Hamish Goldie of the well-known Goldies herd.

Right behind this and securing the second top price was Glenericht Pablo, who sold for 16,000gns. Bred by the Drysdale family, this son of Glenericht Limpet is out of the homebred Glenericht Juicygirl. At just 18 months old, he was the pick of J Wright and Sons based in Lanarkshire.

Last of the five-figure sums in the Charolais ring was Thrunton Paramount who sold for 10,000gns. Bred by the Campbell family, Paramount is sired by the 28,000gns Maerdy Jerusalem. Another trait leader for calving ease he was secured by the Rettie family.

While bull clearance was back to 60% for the breed, the average boosted by over £1,000 to settle at £6,627.

Angus

The number of bulls sold for the Angus breed was also back with 66% selling to average £5,051. This average is up £455 on the previous year.

Leading the way here was a call of 10,000gns for Ettrick Batman V227 from Messrs Gray. Son of Linton Gilbertines President, champion at the sale three years ago and purchased for 17,000gns, he is out of the Belle family line. Born in April 2019, he was secured by A M and C Ewen.

The Alford family at Foxhill sold their first Angus bull at Stirling when Dominator V185 was sold for the next highest price of 9,000gns.

This March 2019-born bull is a son of Gretnahouse Blacksmith and out of Weeton Diamond Mist who was purchased by the family for 7,500gns.

Top of the Northern Ireland entries was Drumhill Exeter V105 who sold for 8,500gns. Bred and exhibited by Jonathan and Lisa Doyle, Exeter is homebred on both sides going back to the famous Lady Heather and Evora lines. Having seen the bull pre-sale, he was secured by a phone bid by Dr Michael Sheehan for his Luddenmore herd based in Co Tipperary.

Simmental

Top of the Simmental breed was a call of 14,000gns which was hit twice by the Stronachs Islavale herd. First at the money was the April 2019-born Islavale Kristoff 19. This Corskie Highlander son is out of the EX91 classified cow Islavale Ethel. Pitgaveny Farms secured the breed’s joint top-seller.

Matching the price was Islavale Kai 19. This son of Irish-bred bull Curaheen Giant 2 is out of homebred dam Islavale Britney. He was the choice of a commercial buyer based in Kerriemuir.

Overall Islavale sold six bulls to average an impressive £8,889. In total, the Simmental bull breed was most popular, with 52 selling for an average of £5,589, up £411 on the year.

Records were smashed for the Shorthorn breed at Stirling. However, these records were from the female section which had a number of high-profile dispersals included.

Hitting the headlines was the 15,000gns Elliot Miss Lea 825, who now stands as the highest-priced female sold at auction.

This was the lead entry from John Elliot who offered 13 lots. Sired by Canadian bull Sull Cyclone she is out of a Crawfdown dam and sold in calf to Elliot Conundrum.

This sale, along with a few other five-figure sums, meant that female average rose by over £1,100 to settle at £3,544 with an 885 clearance.

Limousin

The Limousin breed had a busy week on the market with the Carlisle bull sales taking place only a few days beforehand. That said, strong commercial demand meant that 33 of the 46 bulls forward for the breed sold to average £4,652, up £170 on the year.

Leading the way at a call of 9,500gns was Homebryes Potter.

Brought out by the Allanfauld herd, Potter was purchased alongside his mother for 5,000gns at the Homebryes sale last November. Sired by Fieldson Alfy, he was secured by Buteland Farm.

After this, Dyke Pacman from Messrs MacGregor sold for 8,200gns.

This son of stock bull Goldies Lordoftherings was secured by E and M Simpson, Croft.
