A wild whooper swan found northwest of Lough Neagh has tested positive for H5N8 avian influenza, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has said.

The first case of bird flu to be detected in NI was found in a wild swan near Lough Beg, Co Derry, on Friday.

“These findings are not unexpected and further cases are possible,” a statement on the DAERA website reads.

Outbreaks across Europe have been occurring since late October and cases have been identified in Britain since December.

There have been six cases of bird flu confirmed in the Republic of Ireland. The most recent was confirmed on Saturday in a wild swan found in Co Tipperary.
