Those applying for 40% grant funding for projects costing over £30,000 in Tier 2 of the Farm Business Improvement Scheme now have until 4pm on 10 March to complete applications.

The original deadline was 24 February, however DAERA announced a two-week extension to the application window on Friday.

The department has said that it has been recognised that Tier 2 applications require time and commitment to complete.

A substantial part of the application process is developing a business plan for projects. DAERA has said that the extension will allow applicants extra time to complete these plans.

“In addition, it will allow applicants to fully engage with their banks or lending institutions and work towards meeting the additional supporting information or permissions required for the application process,” DAERA has said.

Tier 2 is mainly for construction projects costing over £30,000, with 40% grant funding available up to a maximum grant of £250,000.

Tier 1

Meanwhile, the first letters of offer to successful applicants under Tier 1 of the capital grant scheme have been sent out this week.

It remains unclear how many applicants will receive funding for Tier 1 projects in the first tranche of the scheme.

However, with over 3,500 Tier 1 applications received for grant funding between £2,000 to £12,000, and £7.5m available for the first tranche, this phase of the scheme is set to be oversubscribed.

Countryside Services has said that letters of offer will continue to be sent out over the coming weeks to successful applicants.

Recipients of these letters then have 28 days to sign and return offer forms if they want to proceed with their Tier 1 investment.

DAERA also has a penalty matrix in place, to discourage scheme underspend and farmers that do not follow through on offers could be excluded from future tranches of FBIS.
