The number of calves passing through marts continues to be steady, with the majority being Angus and Hereford. Friesian bulls are still available, but only in small numbers. Demand is firm.

There is still some exporter activity, but the majority of calves are being snapped up by farmer buyers or agents sourcing for farmers.

The average Friesian bull calf is making from €90 to €120/head, with aged types making over €150/head. Light young calves are making from €70 to €90 in areas.

Slightly improved cull cow trade

With beef cattle scarce and strong demand for manufacturing beef, the cow trade continues to be very strong around the country.

Where fleshed continental cows are on offer, prices are ranging mainly from €1.85/kg to €2.00/kg or from €550 to €650 with the weight. Top-quality heavy cows are making over €2.10/kg, as factory agents and short-keep finishers are the main buyers for these types

Feeding cows are a strong and steady trade, with the majority of continentals making from €300 to €450 along with the weight.

Friesian cows are quite strong also, with good Friesian feeding cows selling from €250 to €350 along with the weight.

Fleshed Friesians are selling from €1.65/kg to €1.70/kg, but the number on offer is low.
