Last year 123,804 farmers across the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland received almost €1.2bn in direct payments from the EU.

The county benefiting from the largest proportion was Cork, where 12,905 farmers got €156m, accounting for 13% of all the direct payments in the county. The average farmer received a payment of €12,118.

The amounts refer to payments received from 16 October 2017 to 15 October 2018.

Cork has the largest number of farmers claiming a direct payment, followed closely by Galway, where 12,046 farmers received subsidies worth €85.5m.

Some 6,895 farmers benefited from €94m worth of payments in Tipperary.

Smallest portion

Dublin got €10.8m, the smallest portion of the total envelope received by any county. However, the 814 farmers based outside the city received an average payment of €13,298. This was €3,675 more than the national average payment of €9,623.

Longford lies second from bottom with €19m or 2% of the total pot.

Mayo had the smallest average payment of just €6,100 per farmer. By contrast, Waterford farmers received the largest average payment of €15,470.A total of €1.8m worth of direct payments went to 279 farmers in Northern Ireland, while €49,282 went to 15 UK-based farmers.

Those receiving the 20 biggest payments, ranging from €198,585 to €323,292, got a total of €4.2m.

The largest single payment went to Co Wexford, where the representatives of Nicholas Furlong received €323,292.
