Calf numbers almost doubled in Brandon Mart, with 600 calves on offer on Monday. There was plenty of bite in prices, especially for beef-cross calves.
Manager Tom McCarthy reminded farmers to make sure calves are between 20 and 25 days old for shipping, with these calves generally selling from €80 to €110 on the day.
Overall, Friesian bull calves made from €65 to €140 for younger calves, with stronger lots making up to €220. Hereford and Angus bulls made from €220 to €380, with heifer calves selling from €180 to €310.
Continental heifers sold from €300 to €450 and continental bulls made from €360 to €460. There was a special section for Friesian heifer calves and these made between €240 and €300. Jersey-cross bull calves sold from €20 to €50.
Cows
There were 80 cows on offer and they made from €50 under to €490 over the €/kg. Cow numbers remained steady, as did prices, with the majority of Friesian cows selling for in or around the €200 with their weight mark, with heavier cows or continentals selling for more. Sample prices include:
