With 199 animals passing through the rings and just two animals going home unsold to give a 99% clearance rate, it showed the high level of demand for all cattle types in Mohill Mart’s general cattle sale on Saturday last.
Heifers weighing between 400kg and 500kg averaged a strong €4.80/kg, with better types averaging €5.45/kg, with lesser suckler and dairy-beef stock averaging €4.06/kg.
Forward store types between 500kg and 600kg averaged slightly behind at €4.50/kg, with a big variance between top-end and poorer-quality stock.
Martbids data shows the top third selling at €5.08/kg, with the bottom third selling at €3.95/kg. A dozen heifers on the day clocked the scales at 600kg or above, with these selling for an average of €4.14/kg.
Good show
A good show of lighter and forward-type store bullocks were present, with farmers and feedlot buyers competing for both types.
The majority of bullocks weighed in between 400kg and 500kg and averaged just under €5/kg at €4.91/kg, with the top third selling at €5.58/kg.
More forward types, totalling 30, between 500kg and 600kg averaged €4.52/kg. This puts a 550kg bullock at €2,485 on average. Just two heavy bullocks above 600kg averaged €4.75/kg.
