Following Friday’s general sale in Roscrea Mart, manager Michael Harty noted another strong trade: “Good cattle are a good trade, but those middle tier cattle are very strong.” He said the presence of feedlots and the growing number of grass buyers around the ring bolstered demand.
Looking at MartBids data, lighter store bullocks were up 10c/kg. In the 400kg to 500kg bracket, Angus and Herefords ranged between €1.95/kg and a very strong €2.20/kg. Continentals started at €2.15/kg and topped at €2.60/kg.


From 500kg to 600kg, the traditional breeds ranged from €1.80/kg to €2.10/kg, with continentals continuing up to €2.40/kg. Friesians sold for between €1.55/kg and €1.75/kg. Heavy bullocks weighing 600kg-plus averaged €2.05/kg, with nearly-finished lots over €2.15/kg.


In the female ring, those weighing between 400kg and 500kg averaged €2.22/kg, with a strong showing of continentals making from €2.05/kg to €2.55/kg. Heifers from 500kg to 600kg averaged €2.11/kg, with continentals again starting at €2.05/kg to €2.35/kg.


By and large, nice Friesian cows made between €1.20/kg and €1.45/kg, with continentals selling for €1.50/kg to as high €1.96/kg.
Commission in the mart is €9/head to the buyer and €10 to €15/head to the seller.
