The statement from transport secretary of state Chris Grayling that farmers will just produce more food if we crash out of Europe is worrying. While the MP was trying to make the point that it is not in the interests of EU farmers to get a no-deal since the UK is such a big buyer. Farmers would welcome the chance to produce more if the reward made sense, but we wouldn’t mind a bit of warning and some serious planning. Plus, I doubt any government would allow food prices to rise too sharply.
