I see Met Éireann has released the list of storms for the 2026/27 storm season which runs from the 1 September to 31 August 2027.
Every year, along with its counterparts in the UK and Netherlands, Met Éireann contributes seven names to a list of 21 storm names.
This year’s choices have a nod to history as Met Éireann celebrates 90 years in existence with four historically significant names; Austen, Evelyn, Kilian and Miriam all have a connection to the Ireland’s national meteorological service. Three more names – Heather, Laoise and Phelim – were chosen as part of a public campaign.
Storms Éowyn and Ophelia were two especially destructive storms that hit the country in 2017 and 2025 and I hope none of this year’s choices gain the same notoriety.
The full list includes Austen, Boelo, Chloe, Dano, Evelyn, Finn, Gwendolyn, Heather, Ivy, Jade, Kilian, Laoise, Miriam, Nicola, Olaf, Phelim, Ruban, Shaun, Theo, Vesna, Wende.
