The Dealer loves a mart (and a mart dinner) better than most but was ignorant to just how much money passes through these agricultural hubs on a daily basis.

Kilkenny Mart saw 1,310 cattle go under the gavel on Thursday last, with 99% of those going on to sell to new homes.

The stock’s value came in at just under €2.5m, a record turnover in one day for the mart.

Meanwhile, in Tipperary, The Dealer tagged along to Mid-Tipp Mart’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Mart board chair Francis Burke told those in attendance that annual turnover has increased from €35m 10 years ago to over €71m last year.

Mart manager Ciara Ryan had better keep batteries in the calculator.
