Kanturk Mart hosted a suckler herd reduction sale on Saturday, which saw an average price of €1,309 on the day.
The 40 cows from the herd of William O'Connor, Knockeenacurrig west, Kiskeam, were Limousins with great temperament. They varied from three-quarter-bred animals to purebred stock. With offerings varying from first calvers to 10th, all were scanned six months in calf to five-star Limousin bulls.
Replacement index
The replacement indexes of the cows vary from one to five stars but this had less of an effect than the age of the animal. This was very visible at the top end of the sale.

The highest price on the day was €1,620 and was paid for a five-star fourth calver (replacement index €129). Not far behind was a one-star third calver that sold for €1,600 (replacement index €45).

Dairy sale
The venue also hosted a clearance sale of dairy stock for Michael Sheahan, Boherbue, who is retiring from dairy farming. This sale featured some in-calf heifers from the herd of Vincent Guiney, Kiskeam. The dairy sale had an average price of €1,300.
