There were 248 bull weanlings on offer at Kenmare Mart’s show and sale last week and while trade for lighter weanlings was positive enough, the same could not be said for bulls over 400kg.
Buyers were anxious to pick up weanlings in the 250kg to 350kg range, with good U grade animals making from €2.60/kg up to €2.90/kg. Plainer light bulls averaged around €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg.

The absolute tops in the heavier weight range was able to hold its own and sell around the €2.40/kg mark, but this was only in exceptional cases, as €2.20/kg was the top for many of these.
Plainer heavy bulls sold for as far back as €1.90/kg, with little appetite for them among buyers.

Summing up proceedings, mart manager Dan McCarthy, said: “Good-quality continental weanlings under 350kg were making over €400 and €500 with their weight, while the bigger ones were struggling.
“The weanling over 400kg, that trade seems to have gone. The market has changed completely since last year. Even within the last six months, it’s turned upside down.”

Commission rates are 1.6% to the seller and €8.50 to the buyer, while the entry fee is €2.
