Marts around the country continue to see big numbers of weanlings come out.
Carnaross Mart had a big show of weanlings on Tuesday night, with 600 animals moving through the rings.
Weanling bulls in the 300kg to 400kg weight category ranged in price from €1.63/kg for Friesian crosses to €2.83/kg for Charolais-cross calves.
Limousin bulls in the same weight category were selling at €2.79/kg, with Simmental calves coming in at €2.56/kg. The average price for the category was €2.67/kg. Top price in this weight section went to a Limousin bull weanling weighing 420kg and selling for €1,400.
Heavier bulls were a little easier, with 400kg to 500kg bulls averaging out at €2.45/kg. Friesian bulls came in at €1.53/kg, with Charolais bulls coming in at €2.84/kg.







There was good appetite for forward bulls, with those around the 550kg mark hitting between €1,350 and €1,450, with one Limousin bull weighing 500kg selling for €1,580 (€3.16/kg).
In the heifer ring, it was a similar trade, with more farmer activity. Heifers in the 300kg to 400kg weight category averaged out at €2.37/kg, with Charolais heifers coming out on top at €2.49/kg.
Limousin heifers followed close behind at €2.39/kg, with Belgian Blue heifers at €2.33/kg. Top price in this section went to a Limousin-cross heifer weighing 340kg and selling for €1,110 (€3.26/kg).
Heavier heifers in the 400kg to 500kg bracket were selling for €2.29/kg on average, with better-quality continental heifers up at €2.70/kg to €2.90/kg.




The top price went to a Simmental heifer weighing 400kg that sold for €1,190 (€2.98/kg).
Factory feedlots were very active for forward heifers, with heifers over 500kg averaging out at €2.46/kg, with the top price going to a Limousin-cross heifer weighing 500kg and selling for €1,410 (€2.82/kg).
Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, mart manager Padraig McElroy said: “We had a big yard of weanlings with plenty of farmer activity, especially for lighter types on Tuesday night.”
