Numbers continue to be well up on the year for Portumna Mart's general sale. Numbers this week amounted to 240 cattle, a figure generally not seen any another month at the Galway Mart.
The increased entry was met with a solid demand with over 90% of the animals present finding trade.
In total, 217 animals sold across the sections with an average sale price of €1.95/kg.
This was dragged under the €2/kg mark by a bigger entry of dairy beef stock than what would usually be seen.
If looking at just the beef-bred cattle, averages are much higher.

The first heifer into the ring was a Limousin-sired calf that weighed 310kg and sold for €2.58/kg (€800).
Reflective of the trade, good-quality Limousin heifers weighing between 400kg and 500kg saw prices exceed €2.40/kg.
Bullocks
Similarly in the bullocks category, the lighter animal more suited for summer grazing or winter feeding fetched the higher prices.
Generally, light bullocks were around the €2.20/kg mark seeing as high as €2.51/kg for Limousin crosses weighing 295kg.
Heavier stock were usually either side of the €2/kg mark depending on breed.
A small entry of cows went as high as €1,270 for a 680kg Limousin cross (€1.87/kg).
