Carrigallen mart held their weekly cattle sale on Monday night with heifers, bullocks, bulls, sucklers and dry cows on offer. Turnout was good on the night with a clearance rate of 100%. The trade for all cattle was strong. They had a special entry of approximately 30 organic cattle on the night, which were highly sought after.

Organic weanling bulls

There was a selection of organic weanling bulls on offer, the majority of these made over €5/kg, with stronger types making closer to €6/kg. Sample prices include a November 2024-born organic Charolais-cross weanling bull weighing 265kg, and selling for €1,510 (€5.70/kg). A November 2024-born organic Aberdeen Angus-cross weanling bull weighed 265kg and sold for €1,470 (€5.55/kg).

Organic weanling heifers

The majority of the organic weanling heifers were Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn crosses, with strong demand from organic farmers for these. Sample prices include a November 2024-born organic Aberdeen Angus-cross heifer weighing 240kg and selling for €1,300 (€5.42/kg). A November 2024-born organic Shorthorn-cross heifer weighed 195kg and sold for €1,030 (€5.28/kg).

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal mart manager Helen Kells said, “the trade for the organic cattle was excellent with the majority making over €5/kg”.

This November 2024-born Shorthorn-cross weanling bull weighed 180kg and sold for €1,010 (€5.61/kg).
