The mart trade continues to move in a positive direction with some exceptional prices being paid for replacement heifers and suckler outfits in marts across the country in the last two weeks.

A huge increase in the price of weanlings appears to have injected a lot of confidence into the suckler market with Balla mart being no exception last Saturday. Suckler outfits hit €6,650 for a March 2025-born Belgian Blue bull calf sold with his 2021-born recipient mother. There were over 500 cattle included in last Saturday’s sale, one of the largest ever sales seen in July in recent times. Store heifers were also in big demand with the average price paid for heifers weighing between 400-500kg coming in at €2,000-€2,500/head. Heifers weighing between 300-400kg came in at €45.17/kg with heifers weighing between 400-500kg coming in at €4.89/kg. Heavy heifers weighing over 600kg came in at €4.66/kg. Top call in the heifer ring went to a March 2024 born Limousin heifer weighing 385kg selling for €2,890 (€7.51/kg).

In the bullock ring average quality bullocks in the 300-400kg weight bracket came in at €4.91/kg while bullocks in the 400-500kg weight bracket came in at €4.79/kg. Heavier bullocks over 600kg came in at €4.62/kg. Balla mart won’t hold a sale this Saturday 2 August, due to Galway Race week with their next sale taking place on Saturday 9 August.

This September 2019-born pedigree Charolais cow sold with her April 2025-born pedigree Charolais heifer calf at foot selling for €5,050.

This March 2022-born Limousin cow sold with her November 2024 born Limousin heifer calf at foot selling for €4,850.

This February 2021-born Limousin cow sold with her July 2025-born Limousin bull calf at foot selling for €4,600.

This June 2021-born Limousin cow sold with her April 2025-born Belgian Blue bull calf at foot selling for €4,400.
