Castlerea Mart held its weekly sale on Thursday with calf numbers still holding strong and heavier weaned calves starting to appear. The trade was dominated by Angus-cross calves, with a small number of Hereford and Friesian-cross calves making up the balance.
Younger, better-quality Angus-cross bull calves weighing between 60kg and 80kg sold to the best trade of the day, going for between €500/head and €600/head.
Lower-quality bulls and heifer calves of the same weight sold from €400/head upwards. Angus-cross calves weighing from 50kg to 60kg sold from €300/head to €400/head, with the lightest calves weighing between 45kg and 50kg selling from €200/head to €300/head.
A small entry of Hereford-cross calves weighing from 50kg to 80kg sold from €400/head to €600/head.
Reared calves
As the spring has progressed, we are now seeing more reared calves starting to appear. Both Angus and Hereford-cross calves weighing from 100kg to 150kg sold from €500/head up to €850/head, depending on quality. There were a number of reared Friesian-cross calves on offer weighing from 110kg to 150kg and these sold from €450/head up to €600/head.
