On Monday evening, Elphin Mart held a special weanling sale for bull and heifer weanlings, where there was over 190 animals on offer.

With all the price drops across weanling bulls in the last four weeks, Elphin mart turned the tide on Monday, when weanlings saw a big lift in demand, as exporters were out in force to secure cattle.

There were some top-quality U and E grade weanlings on offer, with mart manager Ciaran Lynch highlighting the quality of weanlings on the night.

“The quality of stock on offer was exceptional. We had a good go of harvest-born weanlings appearing out and it must be said they were a credit to the farmers who bred them.”

This Belgian blue-cross bull weighing 350kg and born 16/10/25 sold for €2,650 (€7.26/kg).

Weanling bulls

Weanling bulls weighing between 300kg and 400kg saw the biggest lift, with the top third of weanlings selling for €6.32/kg, which is a rise of over €1/kg on the previous week.

Average weanlings in the same weight category sold for €5.22/kg, equating to a rise of 76c/kg on the previous week.

However, the bottom third of weanlings saw poorer demand, with a drop of 6c/kg, indicating the demand there is from exporters for quality bulls.

This demand continued for weanling bulls over 400kg, with the top third of bulls weighing from 400kg to 450kg selling for €6.15/kg, followed by average bulls selling for €5.23/kg.

Ciaran commented: “We had a number of exporters after weanlings on Monday and it was a big help to the bull weanlings. They were going toe to toe for the top weanlings, with several crossing the €6/kg mark and even over €7/kg for some.

“Overall, the trade would be back on the highs we seen last back end and even in early spring, but after the last coupe weeks on the drop, it was great to see an in injection of life into the trade again.”

Weanling heifers

Weanling heifers also saw a boost in trade. There was strong demand for weanlings weighing from 300kg to 400kg.

The top third of these sold to exceptional demand, fetching €5.91/kg, with the average third of heifers selling for €5.14/kg and the bottom third of heifers making €4.47/kg.

Lighter heifers weighing between 200kg and 300kg also saw a boost in trade, with grass buyers back buying after a slower spring. The top third of these sold for €5.47/kg, with the average third making €4.82/kg.

There was a rise in all heifer categories on the previous sale, which is hopefully a sign of stability in the weanling ringz after a difficult four weeks.
