In Scarriff Mart's general cattle sale on Saturday, a special show and sale of weanlings took place, with 273 cattle on offer selling to a clearance rate of 98%.

Bull weanlings took the limelight with 180 on offer, with the bulk of these weighing under 400kg.

In total, 81 weanlings bulls weighed between 200kg and 300kg, with a further 80 weighing between 300kg and 400kg.

Martbids analysis shows the top third of quality cattle were sought after, with the top third of bull weanlings weighing between 200kg and 300kg selling to an impressive average of €6.86/kg, with the top third of bulls weighing between 300kg and 400kg selling to an average of €6.05/kg.

The average selling price of bull weanlings weighing between 200kg and 300kg was €5.84/kg, while the bottom third of weanlings still sold to a solid average of €4.77/kg.

Heavier weanlings weighing between 300kg and 400kg sold to an average of €5.46/kg, with the bottom third selling similar to lighter calves, with an average of €4.74/kg paid for these.

A small number of bulls weighing over 400kg sold, with over €5/kg paid for better-quality bulls, with plainer stock selling back between €4/kg to €4.50/kg.

Heifers

While the bulls dominated numbers sold on the day, there was a steady trade for heifers, with quality lots attracting a premium.

Heifers weighing between 200kg and 300kg sold to an average of €4.73/kg, while Martbids analysis shows the top third of these selling to an average of €5.15/kg.

Trade remained similar for heifers weighing between 300kg and 400kg, with these averaging €4.59/kg, with the top third selling to an average of €5.02/kg, while the bottom third of these heifers averaged out at €4.05/kg.
