There was a boost for live exports this week with a consignment of 1,700 bulls and over 100 in-calf Friesian heifers currently in transit to Algeria.
The high-quality continental bulls are being exported by Cows.ie – David Clarke Livestock with the livestock carrier, the Sarah M, due to reach the port of Oran, Algeria, on 18 October.
The news is a timely boost to weanling producers, with the company now turning their attention to replenishing supplies ahead of another planned consignment in January 2026.
Demand for bulls from customers in Algeria and Morocco has been a key factor in helping to reduce the fall-off in prices, compared to 2025 returns, in recent months.
Prices
MartBids analysis shows average prices for weanling bulls in the 300kg to 400kg weight category selling for €5.02/kg over the last week ,with the top third selling for €5.82/kg.
Throughput in marts is currently at peak levels, boosted by a deterioration in weather, with keen competition evident ringside between live export and farmer buyers.
David Clarke gave credit to the Department of Agriculture for their quick approval of the Sarah M carrier, which he says provides greater options for live exporters and for facilitating the seamless clearance and loading of animals.
Every animal exported was checked and cleared by a Department official to ensure it was in prime condition.
Clarke said animals are under constant supervision during transit and are fed concentrates twice daily along with hay. A vet and experienced stockman also accompany the cattle.
Prior to this consignment, 5,434 cattle were exported to Algeria in 2026, up 3,467 head on 2025, while 3,821 cattle have been exported to Morocco, up 1,579 head.
