Minister for Rural and Community Development and Social Protection Heather Humphreys TD launched a bursary for students attending Levels 5 and 6 in Teagasc Ballyhaise Agricultural College at the recent presentation of certificates event held in Cavan.
Boyne Valley Farmers Co-op is a purchasing group that was established over 25 years ago. It has 55 members based in Meath and Louth.
This co-op purchases inputs collectively for its farmer members, as well as selling cull cows, all with the objective of obtaining the best possible value for the members.
Work placements
Boyne Valley Co-op chair John Clinton said: “Boyne Valley members regularly host students on work placements. We decided to offer bursaries to students in Ballyhaise Agricultural College to show our appreciation for their help each year.”
He added: “We would like to encourage students into education, so our first bursary is to students to help fund their college expenses.
"The second bursary is for students who are planning to travel. This is to help cover their travel expenses. We believe that it is important to travel and to see the diversity of different farming systems across the world."
Principal of Teagasc Agricultural College in Ballyhaise John Kelly announced the first bursary would be offered to two Level 5 first year students who would benefit most from the financial assistance the bursary will offer.
The second bursary would be available to two Level 6 students who intend to travel abroad as part of the work practice practical learning. Each bursary is worth €1,500.

Awards and certificates were also presented by Minister Humphreys to over 80 Level 6 graduates of Teagasc Ballyhaise College.
Head of Education in Teagasc Dr Anne-Marie Butler outlined this important milestone in their agricultural career and congratulated graduates for this achievement.
She added: “I encourage you to continue your professional development, engage with Teagasc education and advisory services, and continue to build your network of support, as it is a very powerful stepping stone for your personal and career development.”
The overall student of the year from 2021 went to Gearóid Kennedy, who also received his Level 6 advanced certificate in forestry. Gearóid Kennedy is from Cuilin Fearais, Paulstown Road, Gowran, Co Kilkenny.
