As I write this week’s column, I am just in the door from a big rollercoaster in Disneyland Paris, after a busy day walking around the parks getting on and off rides.
It is always when I do things like this, either personally or with family, that I really think wellness and fitness are so important. It is real-world health. The ability to do whatever you want, how you want and for as long as you want. That is what fitness means to me.
I don’t have to second-guess what I want to do. Yes, I can swim to lighthouses in the middle of the Atlantic or run marathons, and that is all super exciting, but in the real world this trip is what it means to be fit and healthy.
Sometimes it can provide the health kick that you need to get started or to get back on track. That important trigger point that we all need every now and again. With that in mind, today’s column is about an often forgotten aspect of health. Yet it is one of the key cornerstones of any health journey. Something that will make it so much easier to be healthy.
That something is organisation. Chaos makes it so hard to be healthy. Everything takes so much more effort, and you are setting yourself up for failure when you leave everything to chance.

Here are some ways to organise your life that can make health and fitness much easier.
1. Plan food and drinks for anywhere you are going to spend time. For example, if you are spending time in the car, then have snacks and fluids in the car. If you spend time on public transport, bring food and drink in your backpack so it’s there when you need it.
2. Spring clean your house, your car and your office. We all know how uncomfortable mess is to sit or spend time in. It disregulates us and makes the environment more stressful. So why not set yourself up for success by cleaning and organising where you are spending your time. Calm spaces help to create calm people.
3. Plan out your exercise each week. Every week I look at my diary and schedule in when I am going to exercise and what I am going to do. Take this week, for example. In Disneyland Paris, I have four days here, so I scheduled some gym sessions when I’m here and runs. Then I will swim when I am back at the weekend. A definite plan means I know what I am going to do, and it increases the chances of me getting them done, but I won’t lose sleep if I don’t.
4. Getting your gear ready the night before. This can be really handy, as it is one less step, one less excuse for you not to exercise. When everything is there, you are committed to getting the session done and using the gear. This is even more true at the end of the day after work. Just don’t come in and sit down. Come in, put the gear on, and off you go and get your session done.
5. Food and fridge organisation is crucial. What comes into the house gets eaten, so if you stock the fridge and press with healthier foods, they are foods you are going to eat. Clear out your fridge and organise it so you know what’s in there and where it is. The food that you eat will dramatically improve, and you will reduce your food shop bill too.
Next week: it is all about energy and how to have more. But now, I’m off to get a picture with Ironman.
