Saturday last saw a special dispersal sale take place at Cahir Mart. In all, there were about 120 cows on offer and these were nearly all February and March calving. The herd was made up of a mixture of Friesian cows and some crossbred cows.
Mart manager Jonathan O’Sullivan said that there was strong demand at the sale, as there always is for genuine dispersal sales.

He said that the best demand at the sale was for young Friesian cows, with the crossbred cows not being met with quite as strong of demand, as it is mostly Friesian and Holstein cows in the area.
He said that the best young Friesian cows sold for up to €1,700/head at the top of the market, with most top-quality types making over the €1,500/head mark. Friesian cows sold mainly from €1,300 to €1,500/head.

Jonathan said that the Jersey-cross cows were not met with quite as strong of demand. These sold mainly from €1,100 to €1,300 for better-quality types.

However, there were some plainer types that sold for less than €900/head. He added that cows from the sale were bought by 24 different buyers, so there is plenty of demand out there for a genuine clearance.
Commission rates are 1.5% to the seller and 2.5% to the buyer.
