On Monday evening, Granard Mart had a strong entry of both bull and heifer weanlings in its weekly sale, with Angus-cross heifers dominating the heifer ring and Limousin-cross bulls having the biggest share of the males on the night.
Heavier weanlings weighing over 400kg were back on previous weeks, with weanling bulls weighing between 300kg and 350kg the most sought after.
Continental weanling bulls were scooped up by farmers, with top lots crossing the €6/kg mark for Limousin and Charolais-cross weanlings.
Continental bulls weighing over 400kg still crossed the €5/kg mark for the top 20% of lots.
There was a number of bullocks weighing over 400kg on offer and these sold from €4.50/kg to €5/kg.
Dairy dams
Angus and Hereford-cross bulls from dairy dams were selling to over €4/kg for the better-quality bulls, with the bottom 50% falling short on the €4/kg mark, selling from €3.50/kg to €3.90/kg).
Weanling heifers were trailing behind the bulls. Again, like the bulls, continental suckler cattle commanded the best prices, with strong demand for Limousin and Belgian Blue-cross heifers which commanded from €4.50/kg to over €5/kg.
Angus and Hereford-cross heifers made up the bulk of the entry on the night, with better-quality heifers weighing over 350kg selling for over €4/kg, with heifers weighing from 300kg to 350kg falling short of €4/kg and selling from €3.60/kg to €3.90/kg.
There was a strong crowd ringside on the night and this was reflected in the ringside buyers purchasing over 80% of the cattle.
