It looks like there will be more choice in varieties for spring wheat growers in the coming season.
WPB Duncan will take the majority of the area. It accounts for 64% of the seed in certification at present.
KWS Helium follows with 15% of the seed area, Ophelia with 10%, Mowgli at 6% and Lobster at 5%. Some of those smaller percentages are likely for seed multiplication.
Mowgli offers milling potential and has a KPH of over 80, so it will be a sought-after variety. Importantly, it has a score of 7 to resistance to sprouting.
Lobster might replace KWS Helium, which will come out of seed production in 2027 or 2028.
Lobster is higher yielding. It will be tested for milling potential in 2026 and has good straw, with a KPH reported at over 80 as well.
Ophelia is another spring wheat in production with high yield potential and in trial for Drummonds in the northeast.
