Victory in the National Grand Prix at Portmore, Co Armagh, last Saturday went to Tyrone rider Jonathan Smyth.

Riding Mulvin Lui, he was the fastest of the six double clears in a time of 45.88 seconds. Smyth was also the top placed young rider on the day and picked up the extra prize of a €100 voucher from TRI.

Bred in Kildare by Vincent Loftus and now owned by Noletta Smyth and Roy Craig, Mulvin Lui is an eight-year-old gelding by Luidam and out of the Baron De Chantepie-sired mare, Castleconnor Baron. Loftus has three other offspring registered from the mare, all by the sire Hi Kirainey. Mosstown Hemmingway was campaigned by Robert Harrison, while Mosstown Ernest was campaigned by Aaron Dolan.

Liam O’Meara was close on the winner’s heels as he lodged a clear with Russel Style in 46.54 for second place.

Bred in Laois by Eamon Kenny, and owned by Liam’s wife Helen, Russel Style is an eight-year-old by Russel and out of a Harlequin Du Carel-sired dam, Cruisings Carol.

Claiming third when clear in 48.37 was Ciaran Nallon riding Pat Squibb’s Zaronda 11. This was a second impressive result for Nallon at senior level as he took second in the opening round of the TRM/Horse Sport Ireland New Heights Champions Series in Portmore.
