Mitchelstown Macra members, accompanied by friends, family and members of the local community, took to the Galtee mountains on Sunday 12 April, in aid of Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health.

The day was cold and wet, but what they wanted to get across to the public is that some people wake up in the morning and feel cold and wet on the inside, yet battle the day ahead with determination.

They encouraged people through Facebook that morning with that message in mind to still come out and support one another. They saw plenty of sheep, an outstanding waterfall and the views of the Galtee Lake were breathtaking. Teamwork was core to the success of the climb, with the fine men always giving a helping hand to the ladies.

One of the key aims of the mental health awareness campaign was that it’s ok not to be ok and to stamp out the stigma. They have noticed since they have started their campaign that people are talking about their mental health and how they are really feeling.

All in all, they had a fantastic day up the Galtees, which was polished off in Jackie O’Brien’s pub, Mitchelstown, with complimentary refreshments.

Support

Mitchelstown Macra wants to thank everyone who came for their support. Special thanks to the Keane family (William and Philly), who led us safely up the mountain, Maria Hyland and her dad who were the rescue on standby, Mairead Rice (nurse on call) and Jackie O’Brien’s pub for providing food afterwards.
