Owned and run by JJ Farrell, his wife Concepta and their son Ciaran, the Trillick Hereford herd based in Co Longford was established by the Farrell family in 1946.

Today, the herd comprises 70 breeding cows, bred over the years from bloodlines sourced throughout Ireland and the UK.

According to JJ, “the aim of the herd has always been to produce easy-calving, easy-fleshing cattle with good milk production, which are pleasing to the eye”.

This weekend, the herd will host an inaugural online heifer sale, featuring 22 pedigree maiden heifers, bred from the herds most prominent cow lines.

Over the years, the herd has performed exceptionally well at summer shows, society sales and produced a number of well-known AI bulls such as Trillick George, Trillick Hotspur and Trillick Best.

The upcoming sale presents buyers with the opportunity to tap into those elite breeding lines.

Included in the sale are daughters of the herd’s highly proven stock bulls, Corlismore Commander, Balleen Sterling and Umgola 1 Lawman.

Speaking ahead of the sale, JJ says there is a lifetime of breeding behind these heifers.

“It really is a lifetime’s work getting these heifers to this point. These bloodlines have performed exceptionally well for us over the years and we believe these heifers will go on and do the same for other breeders.”

Taking the form of an online timed auction, bidding will be accessible through Denis Barrett auctions and MartEye, from 28 to 31 August.

A disease-free herd with a C10 TB status, all animals are hypercosis tested and any animals sold for export can be export tested following the sale.
