An interesting pricing tactic in Tesco caught The Dealer’s eye. The retailer is selling a carton of Tropicana orange and mango juice for €2.99, which appears to be the same price as the nearby SuperValu. However, closer inspection revealed that the Tesco product only contains 850ml. The true cost per litre at Tesco is therefore €3.52, or 18% more expensive.

Meanwhile, the latest supermarket data from Kantar Worldpanel for the 12 weeks ending 1 February shows that Tesco’s struggles continue, with market share down from 26% to 25.2% since the same period last year.

Tesco’s sales have fallen by 2.1%. Dunnes saw its sales grow 1.7%, while Aldi and Lidl saw their sales grow by 11.5% and 12.5% respectively.

SuperValu, with 24.9% market share, is now only 0.3% behind Tesco. However, in a market worth €9bn this amounts to a sales difference of about €27m.
