The field of potential candidates for the next IFA presidential race is building fast, even though we’re a long way off from sounding the starting gun.

The latest IFA heavyweight being touted for the farm body’s top job is TJ Maher.

He joins north Cork’s Pat O’Keeffe in the growing list of possible, potential candidates.

While Maher has not officially foisted his banners as yet, the south Tipperary farmer has certainly not ruled out having a go.

When asked recently if rumours of his considering a run for the presidency were on the money, Maher gave an answer which would do any politician proud.

“I never said I’m not interested in the position,” was the Tipp-man’s deft reply.

His retort reminded The Dealer of that famous saying from Duhallow – “you think I’m no fool but I am”.

Should Maher run, he would certainly be a formidable candidate. A former president of Macra, Maher has also chaired Agri Aware.

Within the IFA, he has oodles of experience and, most importantly for electoral purposes, lots of connections.

Maher was regarded as doing an excellent job as chair of the animal health committee. He was formerly south Tipperary chair and is currently chair of the county’s livestock committee.

Although out of the limelight somewhat since his term with the national animal health committee ended, this impediment is unlikely to hinder a savvy communicator such as Maher.

It’s early days, but the next IFA presidential race could very well be a cracker.
