Letter to the chairman of An Taisce

DEAR SIR: I feel obliged to put my thoughts on paper, on behalf of myself and my family. I reside in Lispole, which is situated between Annascaul and Dingle, on the N86. I am a farmer and I also work as an AI technician on the Dingle Peninsula. I am constantly driving on the N86. It’s an extremely difficult road to navigate due to its deep bends and hidden entrances and exits. It also has a very uneven surface in places.

After recent cold winters the road surface was destroyed in areas and had to be dug up and resurfaced, at an enormous cost to Kerry County Council. Do the people of west Kerry not deserve a solid, straight road, with cycle lanes and an exceptional surface that would stand the test of time? Much depends on this new road for the people of west Kerry:

  • Health and safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Access to the peninsula for tourists.
  • The economic viability of the area, ie, farming, fishing, tourism.
  • Easier access to the rest of the county and beyond.

    • The upgrading of the N86 would also provide employment to the area and could possibly help west Kerry out of the recession. With the landowners needs satisfied and catered for, I would ask An Taisce to please withdraw its request for a judicial review and let the upgrading of the N86 proceed.
