There is a more positive tone to the sheep trade for slaughter-fit sheep but factories are resisting any upward movement in base quotes which remain in the region of €7.70/kg plus the 20c/kg quality assurance payment.

Sellers with greater negotiating power have had some success in securing 10c/kg more from the market with prices of €8.10/kg reported.

In contrast, there is significant upward movement in base quotes in Northern Ireland which are up 10p/kg to 20p/kg to £6.80/kg (€7.96/kg). Agents handling large numbers are pushing top returns in the direction of £7/kg (€8.20/kg).

The improved signs of life are also evident in the live trade where factory agents are more anxious for lambs. Mart prices have in some cases improved by €1 to €2 per head with the best trade remaining in marts where wholesale buyers and butchers are active.
