Based in Littleton, Co Tipperary, Robert runs Fossland Services, an agricultural contracting business, while also supplying GPS guidance systems to farmers and contractors across Ireland.

“I started selling GPS systems in late 2004 and early 2005,” Robert explains. “Back then, very few people knew much about guidance systems. The technology has developed hugely since then.”

Today, Robert supplies a range of FJ Dynamics guidance and auto-steering solutions. Having evaluated several systems over the years, he believes FJ Dynamics offers the right combination of performance, affordability and support for Irish farmers.

A changing picture on Irish farms

In recent years, Robert has seen growing demand from both farmers and contractors for FJ Dynamics systems as they look to improve efficiency and accuracy in the field.

“Once an FJ Dynamics system is working in an area, it tends to sell itself,” Robert explains. “Farmers see it in action and want to know more about it.”

While Irish farms are often characterised by smaller fields and mixed enterprises, Robert believes the day-to-day pressures are similar across all farm types.

“Farmers are under pressure to get work done efficiently, especially during busy periods. Guidance systems help reduce overlap, missed areas and input use, while improving overall accuracy,” he says. “That saves time, fuel and costs.”

The technology is now used across a wide range of operations, including fertiliser spreading, spraying, planting, mowing and harvesting.

Improving accuracy in the field

According to Robert, one of the biggest advantages of modern FJ Dynamics auto-steering systems is the consistency they bring to field operations.

“If a crop is planted using the auto-steer system, everything afterwards can follow those same accurate lines,” Robert explains. “You end up using less seed, fertiliser and spray, reducing duplication and improving efficiency across the season.”

Accurate tramlines also help minimise overlap and input waste.

“When your tramlines are supposed to be 24 metres, they’re 24 metres,” Robert adds. “You’re reducing overlap and reducing waste.”

More than just fuel savings

While fuel and input savings are often highlighted, Robert says many customers point to another benefit after installing an FJ Dynamics system.

"One thing we hear regularly from FJ Dynamics users is how much less tiring the day becomes," Robert shares. "They're driving machinery, taking calls and managing the business, so the auto-steering takes some of the pressure off."

Auto-steering reduces the need to focus constantly on steering accuracy, helping operators stay fresher during long working days.

"You still need to be in control of the machine, but you're not concentrating as hard on keeping every line perfectly straight. Farmers often tell me they feel much fresher at the end of the day."

For many operators, reducing mental fatigue can be just as valuable as improving efficiency.

Technology that works for all farmers and contractors

Robert believes one of FJ Dynamics' biggest strengths is its suitability for a wide range of farms and machinery.

“We have everyone from livestock farmers to large contractors using FJ Dynamics systems,” Robert points out. “Some might use them for fertiliser spreading, mowing or general grassland work, while others need a much higher level of accuracy for planting and specialist operations.”

Among the most popular options are the FJ Dynamics AT2 and AS2 auto-steering systems. The AT2 is designed for tractors that are not auto-steer-ready, while the AS2 integrates directly with steering-ready machines.

A major advantage, according to Robert, is flexibility.

"Not every farmer needs the highest level of accuracy. The systems allow people to choose what works best for their farm and budget."

He also believes affordability has helped lower the barrier to entry for precision farming.

"Ten years ago, auto-steering technology was out of reach for a lot of farmers. Modern retrofit systems like FJ Dynamics have made it far more accessible."

The ability to retrofit older machinery is particularly important on Irish farms, where farmers often want to upgrade existing tractors rather than invest in new machines.

Support and simplicity driving adoption

While some farmers may assume precision farming technology is difficult to learn, Robert says ease of use is one of the reasons FJ Dynamics has proven popular.

“Many farmers worry that the technology will be complicated, but the systems are very straightforward once they’re set up correctly,” Robert explains. “Most users become comfortable with it very quickly.”

Support, he says, is another reason he chose to work with FJ Dynamics.

“Support is hugely important,” Robert states. “If there’s anything we can’t solve ourselves, we can call on the FJ Dynamics team for support. There’s a strong support network in place for both dealers and customers.”

Looking ahead, Robert expects FJ Dynamics systems to continue growing as more farmers experience the benefits first-hand, with systems now more affordable and accessible.
