It has been a quieter week in the 2026 harvest as many farmers wait for crops to come ripe, while others get through winter oilseed rape, wheat, rye and spring barley in the good weather.

In the northwest, rain is hampering progress with winter oats still to be cut for example, which has wrapped up for most further south.

Yields in general have continued to disappoint and the impact of the heatwave in July is really showing on crops which just seem to have failed to meet their potential.

That said, the good weather is making work a lot easier to get through and taking huge pressure off.

Winter wheat will disappoint many, at yields of around 3.5t/ac, bushels in the low 70s and moisture contents of 17-18% being reported.

Winter oats are coming in over 3.5t/ac and up to 3.9t/ac at low moisture contents in a number of reports.

Winter rye has been cut on many farms and looks to be performing at similar levels to winter wheat, but more reports are needed.

Spring barley is a mixed bag. Some farmers have protein contents below 8%, while others have them up at 12.5%, neither will meeting malting specifications. Bushels are good in the high 60s and over 72 in some cases.

Moisture contents are varied and yield is mixed with crops under 2.5t/ac and hitting 3t/ac.
