The weekly sale of all cattle types took place in Sixmilebridge Mart on Saturday, with trade good throughout.
The sale of around 340 cattle recorded an exceptional clearance, with 96% of lots on offer finding new homes.
Speaking after the sale, mart manager Sean Ryan said: “Heavier cattle are certainly getting scarce and this is helping to keep prices up €100 a head on the same time last year.
“Anything with weight is in good demand, but we did see store cattle a bit back on previous weeks. The guys buying for grass seem to be out earlier.
“We also [saw] a lot more weanlings coming to market this week and the real light animal is constantly up their price wise, hitting close on €3/kg.”
The small number of heavier bullocks on offer saw prices up to and over the €2.50/kg mark.
Prices for lots in excess of 600kg were seen to be making €800 plus the weight.
Weanlings of 400kg-plus generally sold for around €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg, while the lighter weanling average came into €2.80/kg.
Cull cows proved in high demand, with Friesian cows averaging €1.45/kg, while continental-bred animals sold up to €1.95/kg.
