With what started out as tractor runs organised by Walter Helen and Jimmy O’Sullivan in 2011, the Ahiohill vintage club officially formed in 2014.

“It has really gathered momentum from there on. In 2017, we had our first big silage event and since then, it has gathered momentum. At the moment, we are cutting over 52 acres of silage and 10 acres of corn, which are the main events on the harvest day. They are the the backbone of it,” said Jimmy.

Through the years, the club has raised over €300,000 for local charities in the area.

“When you look around, we're nearly all vintage. We're always involved in vintage, we're either stuck in old motorbikes, tractors or harvesters and it is an interest that has gathered momentum.

"It keeps us going and it’s great to have the harvest day to exhibit the machinery because all the harvesters, tractors and trailers that we will have on the day will be over 30 years old,” he added.

Denis Kelliher has been involved in the club since 2021 and is now the PRO. He is the proud owner of a 1992 John Deere 3650.

“I always had an interest in vintage, but slowly and surely, I was roped into being part of the club. I am delighted to be part of it. We have a lot of interesting people met, a lot of money given to great causes over that time and the event itself can’t go ahead without the 90 members in the club and the extended array of people like landowners on the day,” he said.

Taking place on Sunday 2 August, the Ahiohill harvest day will see nearly 8,000 attendees gather in west Cork to see the vintage machinery demonstration.

With machinery stalls, contractors' tug of war, music from Sabrina Fallon, static displays and other talks “everyone from west Cork is invited to the day and the night,” Jimmy concluded.
