Proposed legislation from farm campaign group Farmers for Action, will not be taken forward at the NI Assembly.

The proposed “farm welfare bill”, which aims to set minimum prices for farm produce in NI, was discussed briefly at Stormont’s agriculture committee last Thursday.

Committee chair Robbie Butler indicated there was not enough time for the bill to progress before the next Assembly election, which is due to take place in May 2027.

The Ulster Unionist MLA also suggested there was limited political support for the proposed legislation.

He said the committee had previously given the bill “lengthy consideration” which had been “concluded”.

Previous scrutiny of the farm welfare bill also raised significant questions about the legal authority of MLAs to intervene with market prices. “Nothing has changed in my view regards the legislative competence of such a bill,” Butler said.
