Dear editor,
Surely the long-term solution is to add value to our calves and establish our own veal industry.
We have the calves, manufacture milk replacer and have lots of meat processing plants.
The Dutch have the market, so why not establish a partnership in Ireland with some veal firms from Holland?
Surely this is something one of our dairy co-ops could do.
Incidentally, The Netherlands produces approximately 230,000 tonnes of veal annually, making it the largest veal producer in the EU.
About 90-95% of Dutch veal is exported, mainly to Italy, Germany and France.
