Lamb throughput at Kenmare Mart continues to drive on, with just over 2,300 going through the ring at the weekly sheep sale on Monday last.
Those weighing from 20kg to 30kg dominated the pens and it was lambs close to or over 30kg that proved to be most sought after.
After the sale, which had a full clearance, manager Dan McCarthy said: “It was fairly lively here today. We had some very good sheep on offer and a great trade with the nice Suffolk lambs making up to between €4/kg to €4.20/kg for ewe lambs.
“For rams, the general run was €3.70/kg to €4/kg. Scotch lambs were making over €3/kg.
“We had plenty men at the ringside and plenty online looking for store lambs this year, which is a great thing compared to what we would have suffered other years, especially for the really light lambs.
“It’s great for the farmers to have so much demand for them. We’re after a great summer down this part of the country and we’re in a great back end now with plenty of grass around.
“There’s good confidence there in sheep now. Numbers were big this week and it’s been similar for the last few weeks.
“The only thing is the heavier lamb is a tougher trade compared to store lambs now.”
