There was a flying trade in Cahir Mart, Co Tipperary, for a flock of 200 mid-season lambing ewes on Friday.
The flock averaged over €200 per head and €192 when dry ewe hogget replacements were added in.
Top prices
Top prices reached €218 per head, while the ewe hoggets were described as attracting a €5 to €10 premium over current prices, selling between €130 and €140.
Mart manager Jonathan O’Sullivan said the upturn in lamb prices has returned some positivity to primary producers, with a great atmosphere at the sale.
Ewes on offer were a mixture of Belclare-Suffolk-cross ewes and Texel-Charollais-cross ewes due to lamb from 10 March to Belclare, Charollais, Suffolk and Texel rams.
Scanning rate
Ewes were carrying 1.85 lambs on average, with many lots marketed with a mixture of twins, single- and triplet-bearing ewes of uniform type.
Ewes were also mixed in age, with the in-lamb ewes on offer aged from two to four years of age.
The special sale stemmed from a change of enterprise and Jonathan O’Sullivan said the fact it was a full clearance of a top-class flock attracted a strong attendance of local customers spanning buyers from Waterford, Kerry and Galway.
There were 19 buyers in total, with Jonathan commenting there were many more who came to buy sheep going home empty-handed.
