Elphin Mart’s Monday evening sale saw a huge injection of positivity in the cattle trade, with nearly all categories of stock up in price on the previous week.

Some 382 cattle passed through the ring, with a 97% clearance rate recorded across both adult cattle and weanlings.

Weanlings accounted for the vast majority of cattle on offer, with 200 bull and 97 heifer weanlings present on the night.

The majority of weanlings on offer sat in the 300kg to 400kg weight category, with 126 bulls of this weight bracket averaging €5.44/kg, with the top third averaging €6.02/kg and the bottom third averaging a healthy €4.86/kg.

Lighter bulls below 200kg averaged €5.62/kg, while lots weighing from 400kg to 450kg averaged €5.06/kg, with the top and bottom third of bulls of this weight circa 50c/kg above and below this price.

A show of heavier bulls weighing 450kg-plus averaged €4.65/kg.

Heifers were the real talk of the day, with just shy of 100 lots of quality animals on offer.

A small selection of heifers weighing below 200kg saw averages of €5.34/kg across all lots being hit, with the bottom third averaging €6.04/kg and €4.66/kg.

Eighty-one heifers tipped the scale between 300kg and 400kg, with a strong average of €5.51/kg paid, with the top third of heifers achieving €6.92/kg of an average price.

Top call of the day was a red and white Belgian Blue-cross heifer. Born February 2026 and weighing 320kg, she sold for €4,550 (€14.22/kg).

Her pen mate, a January-born Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 390kg, sold for €4,450 (€11.41/kg).
